Dave Brunsdon

Dave has a range of interests within the Emergency Management field, with a current focus on promoting infrastructure resilience and the implementation of new national post-disaster building safety evaluation arrangements. He is the National Engineering Lifelines Co-ordinator, and is a Past-President of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering.

An earthquake engineer by origin, Dave has observed first-hand the impacts of a number of significant events including the Kobe and Taiwan earthquakes, and this has generated a passion for improving Civil Defence Emergency Management planning in New Zealand.

Dave's particular field of expertise is in the strategic project co-ordination of multi-agency projects and programmes.

Recent projects include the facilitation of the national exercises 'Ruaumoko' in 2007/08, 'Capital Quake' in 2006, and 'Taurus', a Foot and Mouth Disease Simulation for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in 2005. In 2007 he facilitated a disaster response simulation for the gathering of FRANZ partner representatives from France, Australia and New Zealand. He has also been involved in the establishment and oversight of a World Bank-funded project to enhance Samoa's Disaster Management capability.

Dave is the Chair of the Steering Committee for the University of Canterbury-led Resilient Organisations research programme.

Projects

Sandra Pedersen

Sandra has spent many years focused on making the public aware of what will happen in the event of a major disaster in the Wellington region. This has included education and training, developing emergency response plans for schools and developing and facilitating workshops and practical exercises for schools and businesses.

Working for the Wellington City Council Emergency Management Office, Sandra gained extensive experience in emergency management planning and response co-ordination. This included practical experience while assisting in local flooding and fire events.

In 2003 Sandra attended the multi-hazard emergency planning for schools course at the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Emmitsburg, USA gaining extensive knowledge in planning for educational facilities.

Sandra developed the Wellington City Emergency Management in Schools package. In recognition of this work, Sandra was invited to lead the development of a national emergency management school resource, What's the Plan Stan? funded by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management.

Recently she has co-ordinated the development and delivery of a training package for operational personnel in the Auckland CDEM Group Emergency Operations Centre.

Karen Stephens

Over the last eight years Karen's work in crisis management, business continuity and emergency management has taken her around the world, managing assignments in the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Her extensive experience includes working with major corporations, large Government departments and local government.

As well as working as a consultant Karen has spent two years as Emergency Manager for Wellington City Council where she implemented emergency management plans as well as having high profile input into New Zealand's Emergency Response Planning and policy.

Kristin Hoskin

Kristin's typical clients include the health, utility and governmental organisations, most of whom are members of Civil Defence Emergency Management Groups. As such, they have legislative obligations in declared emergencies. Kristin has worked on developing training programmes in emergency preparedness, developing and facilitating exercises that test emergency plans and organisational relationships, critiquing plans and assisting organisations to improve emergency management components of their operations. Kristin also assists clients in alignment of their business continuity and emergency management processes.

Additionally, Kristin manages projects within the risk portfolio of the New Zealand Centre for Advanced Engineering, New Zealand's largest think tank. In this role she facilitates and contributes to projects and workshops on the management of risk and risk communication. One of her more recent projects addressed organisational attitudes and partnered approaches to risk. This resulted in the publication, "Challenging the Future", of which Kristin is one of the authors. She also project managed the revision of "Fire Engineering Design Guide" culminating in the 3rd edition of this book. Her current risk programme activities are concerned with several projects analysing and addressing natural hazard considerations in land use policy and practice.

Kristin is actively involved in the NZ Branch of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) and the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM). Kristin holds the Certified Emergency Manager® (CEM®) credential and is the current President of the Oceania Council of the IAEM as well as the IAEM Global Professional Services Director. Kristin is a former Branch Councillor of the IFE NZ Branch.

Projects

Gavin Treadgold

Gavin brings a unique skillset to comprehensive emergency management in New Zealand. His background includes tertiary studies in management science, information systems, geographical information systems (GIS) and emergency management.

He is a certified USAR Category 1 Responder, and has been a Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) volunteer for ten years. In 2002, Gavin spent five months with the District of Columbia Emergency Management Agency in Washington, D.C. as an intern, where he gained unique experience and training in emergency management in the age of terrorism.

Predominantly, Gavin focuses on Readiness, and Response. He specialises in reviewing emergency management arrangements, developing plans, and co-ordinating exercises. His experience covers a range of sectors including health, central government, utility and the private sector.

Gavin is also a member of the Board and the Project Management Committee for the Sahana project – a free-and-open source Disaster Management System. This project started as a response tool in Sri Lanka following the 26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunami. He has taken an active voluntary role in this rewarding project, including co-facilitating a workshop in Columbo, Sri Lanka in September 2005.
